WBD Teams Up with Disney and Universal to Sue AI Company Midjourney Over Copyright Issues

Warner Bros Discovery (WBD) has initiated legal action against Midjourney, a San Francisco AI firm, for allegedly infringing on its copyrighted characters, including Superman, Batman, and The Joker. Filed in a California federal court, the lawsuit accuses Midjourney of enabling users to create unauthorized images and videos of WBD properties through its commercial AI subscription service. WBD claims that Midjourney uses its intellectual property (IP) without permission, stating, “Midjourney thinks it is above the law.” This lawsuit follows similar complaints from Disney and Universal, marking a significant shift as Hollywood studios start addressing AI infringements. As WBD aims to safeguard its content and investments, it reflects a broader industry concern about how to balance AI advancements with copyright protection. Meanwhile, other studios like Lionsgate and AMC Networks are exploring formal partnerships with AI companies to enhance creativity while safeguarding their proprietary works.
