Websites Have the Option to Opt Out of Google Bard and Upcoming AI Models

Google recently introduced a new tool, Google-Extended, allowing websites to opt out of having their data used for training future AI models such as Google Bard. This announcement, made on Thursday, addresses the concerns of web publishers who seek greater control over their content. With the implementation of Google-Extended, website administrators can easily manage access to their content through the robots.txt file, determining how their material is indexed by crawlers. Danielle Romain, VP of Trust at Google, emphasized the importance of this feature for enhancing choice in generative AI use. As competition heats up, notably with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which has also launched its web crawler, many reputable publications—including Medium, the New York Times, CNN, and Reuters—have opted out of AI training data access. Despite initial setbacks, Google Bard has continued to improve, recently expanding its multilingual support and capabilities.
