Welsh Researchers to Create AI App for Early Detection of Potato Blight

Share

Welsh scientists at Aberystwyth University are developing a groundbreaking app called DeepDetect, designed to combat potato blight, a severe threat to global potato crops. Utilizing artificial intelligence, this mobile application aims to provide farmers with early disease warnings and accurate diagnoses directly on their smartphones. Potato blight, primarily caused by Phytophthora infestans, accounts for 20% of potato crop losses, costing the industry approximately £3.5 billion globally. Traditional disease detection methods are often labor-intensive and subjective. The DeepDetect project seeks to streamline this process, enhancing productivity and reducing reliance on harmful pesticides, ultimately benefiting both the environment and farmers’ finances. Initial research includes engaging with farmers to understand their specific needs and refining the app’s capabilities. Funded by the Welsh Government, this initiative not only aims to secure food production in Wales but also holds the potential for applications across various crops, promoting innovative agricultural practices.
