Meta has introduced a new Message Summaries feature for WhatsApp, leveraging AI to condense unread messages into concise bullet points. This feature utilizes Meta’s Private Processing technique, ensuring that message content remains confidential and inaccessible to Meta during summary generation. Users can activate the summarization by tapping an “Summarize privately” banner above unread messages. Initially rolling out to English-speaking WhatsApp users in the US, Meta plans to expand the feature to other languages and regions later this year. The feature aims to help users catch up on conversations without sifting through entire threads, particularly beneficial for those involved in large, active chats. Importantly, users must opt in to receive summaries, as the feature is disabled by default. Moreover, WhatsApp provides the Advanced Chat Privacy option, allowing users to exclude specific chats from processing by the AI.
