While Medical AI Startups like OpenEvidence Shine, Untapped Potential Lies ‘Beneath the AI Surface’

OpenEvidence, a Boston-area startup specializing in generative AI, is transforming how U.S. physicians access clinical information from leading medical journals. With around 40% of doctors reportedly using the platform to stay updated on medical research, OpenEvidence’s popularity has soared, leading to a $210 million venture funding round in July that increased its valuation to $3.5 billion. The AI tool recently achieved a perfect score on the U.S. medical licensing exam and is in discussions for another funding round that could double its valuation to $6 billion, according to reports.

However, many doctors are engaging in “shadow AI” usage, benefiting from the app without disclosure to patients or employers. In contrast, Corti, a Danish competitor founded in 2016, is pivoting to focus on “AI infrastructure” tailored for healthcare, emphasizing compliance and data residency. As the demand for specialized AI services grows, the healthcare sector remains cautious about general-purpose AI solutions from tech giants.
