Why AI and Humans Perceive the World Differently, Leading to Garish AI Images

How Computers Perceive Images vs. Human Vision: An Insight into AI Capability

Computers perceive images fundamentally differently than humans due to advancements in generative artificial intelligence (AI). AI tools can describe images or create new visuals based on textual input, making an understanding of computer vision essential. My research, published in Visual Communication, highlights how AI-generated images often lack the nuances present in human perception, such as color depth and cultural context. While human vision relies on interpreting light and recognizing attributes like shape and movement, computers process images by analyzing edges and textures.

Completing CAPTCHAs helps train AI, enhancing its ability to differentiate between objects. In my study, AI-generated images tended to be more sensationalized and vibrant compared to original photographs, favoring stock aesthetics. Balancing human detail with AI efficiency can optimize communication and data organization in the digital age. Recognizing the advantages and limitations of both visions is crucial for effective engagement in a tech-driven world.
