Why OpenAI, Google, and Perplexity Are Offering Free AI Tools Exclusively in India

OpenAI, Google, and Perplexity are aggressively targeting AI users in India by offering free access to their paid AI tools. Capitalizing on India’s substantial smartphone user base of around 730 million and affordable internet rates, these companies see the Indian market as pivotal for AI growth and data collection. Experts suggest that these zero-cost plans aim to gather diverse linguistic data, vital for enhancing AI training. Google’s Gemini AI Pro subscription was recently made free for 18 months, catering to 500 million Reliance Jio users. Simultaneously, OpenAI’s ChatGPT Go plan transitioned to a free model for a year, resulting in a staggering 607% increase in daily active users to 73 million, surpassing U.S. figures. Perplexity also amplified its presence by offering a free year of its Pro plan to Airtel users, now accounting for over one-third of its global user base. India’s rich linguistic diversity provides invaluable training data, essential for advancing AI technologies.
