Wikipedia Calls on AI Companies to Use Paid API Instead of Scraping Data

Wikipedia is adapting to the AI era, as outlined by the Wikimedia Foundation in a recent blog post. With declining website traffic, the organization urges AI developers to use its content responsibly, emphasizing proper attribution and access through its premium service, Wikimedia Enterprise. This paid platform enables large-scale content use while minimizing server strain and supporting the nonprofit’s mission. Concerns have arisen over AI bots scraping Wikipedia content, often masquerading as human users, leading to a notable 8% decline in human page views year-over-year. To combat this, Wikipedia has updated its bot-detection systems and is emphasizing the need for transparency in sourcing information. The foundation advocates for AI developers to credit human contributors whose works are utilized, as fostering trust in online information depends on clear sourcing. Earlier this year, Wikipedia unveiled an AI strategy to assist editors with tasks, rather than replace their invaluable contributions.
