Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist John Carreyrou and five other authors have filed a copyright lawsuit against six major AI companies: Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, Meta, xAI, and Perplexity. The complaint, submitted in the US District Court for the Northern District of California, alleges these companies engaged in “deliberate theft” by using pirated copies of their books to train large language models. Carreyrou, who opted out of a $1.5 billion class-action settlement with Anthropic, is leading the charge in this significant case, known as Carreyrou v. Anthropic PBC et al, N.D. Cal., No. 25-cv-10897, filed on December 22, 2025.
