Yoshua Bengio is Transforming AI Safety at LawZero

admin

Isaac Asimov’s foundational laws for robotics included a crucial “zeroth law,” emphasizing that robots must not harm humanity. In line with these ethical considerations, AI pioneer Yoshua Bengio has established LawZero, aimed at ensuring that AI development does not endanger humanity. Recently alarmed by the risks posed by increasingly autonomous AI systems, Bengio called for a pause in advanced AI projects, referencing current concerns such as bias and potential future threats. As an alternative, he proposes “Scientist AI,” a non-autonomous system designed to assess and block harmful AI actions without personal goals. Bengio asserts that defining moral standards should come through democratic processes, and he envisions Scientist AI as a tool to facilitate rational public discourse. Despite his pioneering work in AI, he expresses regret for not addressing safety concerns earlier. Bengio advocates for collaborative efforts to mitigate AI risks, encouraging active participation in shaping a responsible AI future.
