YouTube Unveils New Tool to Shield Creators from AI Deepfakes

YouTube has launched a beta feature, the “likeness detection” tool, aimed at protecting creators from AI-generated content that mimics their likeness. This initiative responds to rising concerns about synthetic images and videos contributing to misinformation and online harassment. The tool functions similarly to YouTube’s copyright detection system, flagging unauthorized use of a creator’s likeness by requiring personal verification through a government ID and a video of the user’s face.

Once set up, it can detect and report instances where an AI-generated video misuses a creator’s image, although some may result in false positives due to fair use. Creators can quickly report AI fakes, but YouTube warns that not every flagged video will be removed, especially if it involves parody or unrealistic depictions. Realistic AI videos that suggest endorsement or illegal activity are more likely to be taken down, aligning with YouTube’s community guidelines for content moderation.
