In 2023, over 150 YouTube channels promoting fake anti-Labour narratives attracted more than a billion views, leveraging AI-generated content to monetize political division in the UK. A study by Reset Tech revealed that these channels amassed 5.3 million subscribers, creating 56,000 videos targeting Labour leader Keir Starmer with inflammatory claims, such as arrest threats and baseless accusations about immigration. Despite YouTube’s efforts, including removing channels flagged by the Guardian, new content continues to surface, raising concerns about the platform’s content moderation tactics and the proliferation of synthetic propaganda. Reset Tech noted global variations, with similar channels targeting politicians in Europe. Labour officials express alarm over the impact of fake news on democracy, emphasizing the need for platforms like YouTube to enhance monitoring and accountability. The UK government is collaborating with online platforms to combat misinformation, amid fears that such divisive content undermines public trust in democratic institutions.
