Docker, Inc. has introduced support for the Model Context Protocol (MCP), enhancing the development of AI applications through familiar container tools. Nikhil Kaul, Docker’s VP of Product Marketing, highlighted the launch of the Docker MCP Catalog and Docker MCP Toolkit as vital AI extensions that simplify building AI agents. Developers can now discover, run, and manage over 100 MCP servers from providers like Grafana Labs and Heroku through Docker Hub. This follows the earlier implementation of large language models (LLMs) on local machines using the Docker Model Runner extension. Future updates will enable teams to publish and manage their own MCP servers with robust access controls. As AI capabilities become integral to application development, Docker aims to empower developers without requiring a shift from established tools. This ease of experimentation is crucial as familiarity with AI tools increasingly becomes essential for career growth in software development.
