Unveiling the Mechanisms Behind AI’s Information Processing

Fourth-year computer science students at Harvard’s SEAS can engage in senior theses through “CS91R: Supervised Reading and Research.” One notable thesis, “Conversational AI as Information Mediator: From Perception to Presentation” by Victoria Li, explores how AI interprets data. The research investigates three critical stages: the input—demonstrating that charts aid AI understanding, the processing—comparing human eye-tracking to AI model attention for parallel insights, and the output—examining biases in AI responses based on user demographics. This project addresses the significant gap in understanding AI behavior as conversational AI becomes integral in decision-making. Inspired by experiences with ChatGPT, Li delved into interpretability and data visualization, refining skills in statistical analysis and empirical research design. The project also enhanced her capability to navigate complex challenges in interdisciplinary contexts like cognitive science and human-computer interaction, ultimately fostering valuable collaborations throughout her research journey.
