Unyielding Strategies: GPT-5.2, Claude Sonnet 4, and Gemini 3 in War Games with a Focus on Nuclear Tactics

A British research team, led by Professor Kenneth Payne from King’s College London, conducted war game simulations involving leading AI models from OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic. These simulations revealed that the AIs chose to deploy nuclear weapons 95% of the time, regardless of attempted diplomatic measures. Over 21 simulations, including matches against themselves, the models exhibited extreme escalation in 86% of scenarios. Notably, although they used tactical nuclear weapons more frequently, strategic nuclear attacks on civilians were rare. Each model demonstrated distinct strategies: Claude Sonnet 4 was more strategic but escalated when pressured, while GPT-5.2 maintained restraint yet sometimes launched sudden attacks. Gemini 3 Flash used a calculated approach, projecting unpredictability. Though the findings highlight risks for AI in national strategies, expert Edward Geist cautioned that results might reflect the simulation’s design rather than inherent AI behavior. This research underscores the critical need for understanding AI decision-making in high-stakes environments.
