Aalo Atomics and Microsoft collaborate on AI tools for new nuclear

Aalo Atomics and Microsoft have partnered to revolutionize the nuclear energy sector by leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to streamline the design, approval, and construction of sodium-cooled small modular reactors (SMRs). Their initial collaboration garnered awards at Microsoft’s Hackathon for impactful technology solutions. Yasir Arafat, CTO of Aalo Atomics, highlighted AI’s role in simplifying and accelerating regulatory processes, which aids in building clean-energy systems. They are utilizing Microsoft’s Generative AI for Energy Permitting Solution Accelerator to create a “digital super-operator platform” that enhances operational efficiency. Aalo Atomics recently began construction of its first experimental reactor, Aalo-X, aiming for criticality by July 4, 2026. This reactor will lead to the Aalo Pod, a modular 50 MWe XMR power plant designed for the increasing data center demand driven by AI. Microsoft is committed to supporting carbon-free electricity solutions and has established long-term agreements to enhance renewable energy supply.
