Academic Senate consider usage of AI grading tools – The Channels

On February 25, City College’s Academic Senate convened to discuss Gradescope, an AI-assisted grading platform, and updates to academic integrity terminology related to AI. Senator Laura Woyach advocated for Gradescope, emphasizing that while it helps group similar student responses, it does not autonomously grade assignments. This tool aims to alleviate grading burdens for faculty, enabling more consistent evaluations and increased student learning through low-stakes assignments. President Joshua Ramirez noted the intense grading challenges faced by math and English faculty and acknowledged potential resistance to implementing Gradescope. The Senate also revised definitions of cheating to include unauthorized AI usage and addressed the need for institutional authorization for AI tools to support students’ needs. Language updates defined fraud and misrepresentation concerning AI-assistance, emphasizing a “multi-pronged approach” for detecting AI misuse. The Academic Senate will reconvene on March 11 to continue these discussions.
