Acadia University opens up AI literacy course to public for free

Acadia University has launched a free online course on artificial intelligence through its Open Acadia platform, aimed at adult learners. Originally designed for students, the self-paced course has gained nearly 500 enrolments since January. Acadia’s Vice-Provost, Lauren Wilson Finniss, emphasized the need to provide valuable resources that cater to growing interest in AI. The 2½-hour introductory module covers text-based AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude, helping participants understand the differences between human cognition and AI processes. The course includes a lecture by psychologist Daniel Lametti, who underscores the importance of using AI responsibly to enhance rather than diminish cognitive abilities. Although only 20 people have enrolled since its public release, the university plans to update the course regularly to reflect rapid advancements in AI technology. This initiative not only supports local adult education but also addresses the societal curiosity surrounding AI.
