Africa’s Push for ‘AI Sovereignty’ Kicks Off with 40-City Model Context Protocol Hackathon

The Cortex Hub has unveiled the MCP Hackathon Africa 2025, set to take place in over 40 cities from September to November 2025. This initiative aims to integrate African languages, cultures, and priorities into the future of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The eight-week program invites developers, researchers, startups, and students to create practical solutions using the Model Context Protocol (MCP), enhancing large language models with local information.

The hackathon will conclude with a showcase in Cape Town, where finalists will present to global investors and tech leaders. Supported by major tech partners like Datacentrix and Seacom, this initiative represents a strategic move for Africa to lead in Artificial General Intelligence and safeguard digital sovereignty.

Participants will benefit from mentorship, bootcamps, and resources, focusing on sectors like telecommunications and agriculture. This hackathon not only aims to foster innovation but also to position Africa at the forefront of global AI development.
