AI: A Band-Aid Solution for America’s Education System

AI Is an Artificial Fix for American Education

As Americans adapt to artificial intelligence (AI), skepticism remains, particularly in K-12 education. A 2025 PDK Poll indicates declining trust in AI for various educational applications, especially lesson plan development, where support plummeted from 62% in 2024 to 49% in 2025. Despite growing acceptance among students—primarily middle and high schoolers—there’s concern over AI-generated assignments. States are struggling to catch up with technological advancements, with many issuing voluntary AI guidelines that emphasize online safety and teacher training. AFT President Randi Weingarten highlights issues of safety and disinformation, and while over 20 states address AI-related cheating, smartphone bans are becoming common. Teacher-approved AI tools exist, but distinguishing between helpful and harmful AI use is challenging. With funding cuts looming post-COVID, state education leaders face significant challenges in developing effective AI frameworks. The call to enhance AI literacy and training continues as educators navigate this evolving landscape.
