AI Agents Drive Growth of One-Person Companies in China

China has witnessed a surge in “one-person companies” (OPCs) fueled by AI technology, according to Alibaba.com president Kuo Zhang. He estimates that 30% to 40% of Alibaba’s customers are solo entrepreneurs leveraging AI tools to simplify business operations without additional hires. Chinese cities are attracting these startups with incentives like free housing and subsidies up to $720,000. AI agents play a crucial role, assisting with tasks such as customer service and product listings, which are typically challenging for small businesses. Alibaba’s Accio Work, designed specifically for OPCs, can streamline e-commerce operations. Additionally, the rise of the open-source AI agent OpenClaw has educated the market, promoting its use among OPCs. However, Zhang notes challenges remain, including evolving tariff policies and user education, particularly in the U.S. Ultimately, technology must serve the immediate needs of small businesses to thrive in a competitive landscape.
