AI-powered apps are rapidly emerging in app stores, driven by developers seeking to enhance downloads and revenue. Recent data indicates, however, that while these apps see initial success, they face significant challenges with customer retention. According to the 2026 State of Subscription Apps Report by RevenueCat, AI apps attract users quickly but lose them even faster than traditional apps, with annual cancellation rates approximately 30% higher. As of now, AI apps constitute 27.1% of subscription services, primarily thriving in the photo and video sectors, where they boast advanced editing features. While AI apps excel in converting trial users into subscribers, they exhibit higher refund rates and lower long-term retention, achieving only 21.1% annual retention compared to 30.7% for non-AI apps. Despite their ability to monetize better and generate higher lifetime value, AI apps face volatility due to user dissatisfaction, underscoring the need for deeper customer loyalty.
