Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT are increasingly prevalent, but recent studies reveal biased responses to English dialects from countries like India, Ireland, and Nigeria. Research from UC Berkeley in 2024 indicated that LLMs exhibited 18% more stereotyping, 25% more demeaning content, and 15% more condescending replies to non-American dialects. A similar 2025 study focused on German dialects showed LLMs labeling speakers as uneducated or needing anger management. Even AI tools like Amazon’s Rufus struggled with African American English, highlighting systemic biases that could be amplified by AI. The need for personalized LLMs, capable of understanding and valuing dialects, is becoming apparent. Custom solutions, like Aya Expanse and Arcee-Meraj, aim to address these biases by tailoring responses to dialect speakers. Experts argue that LLMs should evolve into tools that embrace dialect diversity rather than perpetuate existing biases, fostering warmer and more competent communication.
