Apart from homework, teens are turning to AI chatbots like ChatGPT to emotional support and mental health advice.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming how children engage with technology, but a recent report from Internet Matters highlights significant concerns regarding its impact on their safety and development. Titled “Me, Myself & I: Understanding and safeguarding children’s use of AI chatbots,” the study surveyed 1,000 children and 2,000 parents in the UK. It revealed that nearly 64% of children utilize AI chatbots for homework assistance, emotional advice, and companionship, primarily focusing on platforms like ChatGPT and Snapchat’s My AI. Alarmingly, many children are forming emotional attachments, with 15% preferring AI interactions over human conversation. The research emphasizes the need for a collaborative effort among the government, schools, and parents to safeguard children. Recommendations include implementing parental controls, promoting AI literacy in educational curricula, and fostering discussions about navigating AI chatbot reliability. Overall, while AI presents educational opportunities, its emotional implications for children demand careful oversight.
