As obesity, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and sleep apnea rates rise, advanced chronic liver disease and cirrhosis cases are also increasing. Mayo Clinic researchers have developed an innovative AI model that detects advanced liver disease in asymptomatic patients, effectively doubling diagnoses compared to traditional methods. Early detection is critical for timely intervention, potentially reducing the need for liver transplants. The AI analyzes electrocardiogram (ECG) data from over 11,500 patients, revealing essential patterns linked to liver disease. This noninvasive and cost-effective method enhances patient outcomes, as many diagnosed were previously unaware of their condition. The study, involving 248 Mayo Clinic clinicians, demonstrates the potential of AI in improving preventive care and personalizing treatment. Future follow-ups will assess the long-term impact on newly diagnosed patients. This research is part of Mayo Clinic’s broader Precure initiative, aimed at anticipating and intercepting disease development.
