Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly adopted in Switzerland, with nearly half the population utilizing the technology. A recent survey by the Federal Statistical Office highlights that AI usage, particularly for generating texts and images, varies significantly by age and education. While 79% of 15 to 24-year-olds engage with AI tools, only 28% of those aged 55 to 64 do so, revealing a growing digital divide exacerbated by AI. Moreover, AI usage is more prevalent among highly educated individuals, and men from older generations are frequent users. Despite rapid adoption, barriers remain; a third see no benefits, while data security concerns deter some. Additionally, the survey shows a spike in problematic online content, indicating increased risks like disinformation and fraud. As AI tools become prevalent, it’s essential to scrutinize their outputs critically. Overall, while AI is revolutionizing digital interactions, it is also deepening existing inequalities.
