The University of Chicago Law School is launching an innovative course called the AI Lab, where students will build a generative AI tool to assist millions in understanding landlord-tenant law. Led by Professor William H. J. Hubbard and former student Kimball Dean Parker, this immersive experience aims to equip law students with entrepreneurial skills. Throughout the course, students will create a comprehensive database of legal summaries, conduct interviews to understand user needs, and develop a chatbot akin to ChatGPT focusing on renters’ rights. This project addresses the complexities of legal information access, helping individuals without financial means to obtain legal assistance. With AI’s increasing role in the legal field, the AI Lab emphasizes competency and familiarity with technology essential for modern legal practice. By offering hands-on exposure to AI tools, UChicago Law prepares students for future challenges in the evolving intersection of law and technology, making a significant impact on access to justice.
