Researchers from VIB and UGent, in collaboration with UZ Gent clinicians, have developed PIDgeon, an innovative AI tool designed to accelerate the diagnosis of rare immune diseases. This advanced technology analyzes complex lab data, enabling faster and more focused diagnoses, particularly for conditions that are infrequently seen by doctors. Primary immune deficiencies, such as severe combined immune deficiency, can be life-threatening if not identified quickly. PIDgeon automates the analysis of standardized flow cytometry data, detecting immune cell abnormalities and suggesting potential disease states. The tool generates interpretable reports, enhancing doctors’ understanding and enabling responsible clinical decision-making. With high accuracy validated on nearly 1,000 patients across Europe, PIDgeon is particularly effective in identifying significant T cell abnormalities. While it serves as a decision support system to aid in urgent case prioritization, it does not intend to replace clinician expertise. PIDgeon is not currently available for clinical use. #FlandersNewsService
