Most developers in Southeast Asia and India use AI tools

A recent Agoda study reveals that nearly all developers in Southeast Asia and India utilize AI tools for productivity, with 95% engaging weekly to expedite software development. On average, developers save four to six hours weekly, but only 22% leverage AI for unfamiliar problems. There’s a noticeable dependency on human oversight, as 67% review AI-generated code before merging. Moreover, 60% lack formal AI policies, underscoring the importance of team-led validation processes, which 72% find enhances productivity and code quality.

Despite high AI adoption, a skills gap persists, with 72% of developers self-taught, and only 28% receiving formal training. This is particularly evident in regions like Singapore, where formal training access is nearly double that of Vietnam. Developers feel pressured to adapt, with 58% stating AI proficiency should be a baseline hiring requirement. Key companies, such as Carousell and MoMo, demonstrate effective AI integration, further illustrating the pragmatic approach of maintaining quality through collaboration.
