Many inscriptions are damaged, complicating their interpretation. Researchers at Google DeepMind, alongside academic partners, have created Aeneas, an AI tool named after the Trojan hero. Trained on over 176,000 inscriptions, Aeneas can restore missing words, identify writing locations, and find historical parallels rapidly. The tool boasts an accuracy rate of 73% for short missing texts and 72% for provincial assignments, proving beneficial for historians who found its recommendations useful in 90% of cases. Aeneas builds on the earlier Google project, Ithaca, further aiding in the interpretation of ancient texts.
