Monash University and the Australian Federal Police (AFP) are collaborating on a groundbreaking tool called ‘Silverer’ to combat cybercrime, particularly in generating harmful AI content like child abuse materials and deepfakes. The AI for Law Enforcement and Community Safety (AiLECS) Lab is developing this data-poisoning technology, which subtly alters datasets to hinder AI’s ability to produce malicious images and videos. By modifying the input data, the tool aims to generate distorted or useless outputs, effectively protecting against misuse. This innovative approach is crucial as the AFP reports a surge in AI-generated harmful content, posing significant challenges for law enforcement. The ultimate goal is to provide an accessible solution for everyday Australians to safeguard their online data. Currently in its prototype phase, Silverer shows promise in mitigating the risks associated with malicious AI technologies.
