AI tools in social work are causing significant issues, with reports of harmful inaccuracies in records, such as incorrect indications of suicidal ideation and nonsensical transcriptions. A comprehensive seven-month study by the Ada Lovelace Institute across 17 English and Scottish councils highlighted that these AI systems, including popular tools like Magic Notes, sometimes misrepresent clients’ experiences, raising serious concerns about safety and decision-making. While AI transcription offers time-saving benefits and can enhance relational aspects of care, inaccuracies may lead to misplaced assessments and consequences for both clients and social workers. Experts warn that inadequate training on AI tools and a rush to implement these technologies could jeopardize the quality of care. The British Association of Social Workers (BASW) advocates for clearer guidelines on AI use and emphasizes the need for thorough checks on AI outputs, stressing that reflective practice is essential for effective social work.
