AI Tool of the Week: How UK's digiLab is building AI for the planet’s largest coral restoration project

UK-based digiLab is collaborating with King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) to develop an innovative AI digital twin platform aimed at enhancing coral restoration efforts. Established in 2009, KAUST focuses on tackling global scientific and technological issues, including environmental challenges. The AI platform will support the KAUST Coral Restoration Initiative (KCRI), the largest of its kind in the world, located in Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea. DigiLab’s AI solutions will enhance coral monitoring, optimize sensor placement, and speed up analysis, reducing tracking time from two months to just two weeks. This partnership aims to produce two million corals by 2030, with advanced tools improving vital data collection for coral health. With a projected digital twin data volume of 22 petabytes, digiLab is set to revolutionize coral restoration efforts globally, establishing a new standard for conservation practices through innovative technology and international collaboration, addressing critical reef ecosystem challenges.
