Fraudulent insurance claims and online retail returns are surging in the Netherlands due to AI tools that generate hyper-realistic fake images and documents. Major retailers like ASOS, Amazon, and Zalando reported over 1,000 AI-manipulated claims in December 2023 alone. For instance, a customer used ChatGPT to fake damage on a pair of 50-euro pants, resulting in a swift refund. The Dutch Association of Insurers noted a young man attempted to claim lost Cartier sunglasses using an AI-generated invoice, though both claims were rejected after database verification. Insurance fraud cases exceeded 9,000 in 2024, reflecting a 1,000-case increase from 2023, spurred by AI’s capabilities. Experts warn that the ease of manipulation could lead to increased payouts and premiums, affecting honest policyholders. Fraudsters leverage advanced AI models, complicating preventative measures. Even minor false claims can result in severe penalties, including registration in fraud databases, fines, and insurance cancellation.
