Alibaba is reshaping its consumer AI strategy by launching the Qwen (千问) consumer business group, aimed at creating an AI super app. This new unit merges the Intelligent Information and Intelligent Connectivity divisions, led by VP Wu Jia (吴嘉). Key components of Qwen include the Qwen app, Quark, various AI hardware projects, UC Browser, and Shuqi Literature, emphasizing Alibaba’s commitment to AI in everyday life.
The Qwen app, released in public beta on November 17, is built on the Qwen3 open-source language model, offering free, versatile AI functionalities that rival ChatGPT. It aims to be an all-encompassing AI assistant, integrated into phones, PCs, smart glasses, and more. With over 10 million downloads in its first week, Qwen is rapidly gaining traction. Future developments will enhance its capabilities, linking services like maps, delivery, and shopping. Alibaba’s strategy focuses on refining Qwen and deeply integrating it within its extensive ecosystem.
