On Thursday, AMD introduced the Helios AI server, a significant move aimed at challenging Nvidia’s dominance in the AI chip market. Unveiled during the “Advancing AI” conference in San Jose by CEO Lisa Su, the Helios server will include 72 MI400 chips, competing directly with Nvidia’s NVL72 system. The development signifies a shift in the AI chip industry, where companies are transitioning from standalone chips to integrated server systems. Su emphasized the importance of open collaboration across the industry, noting AMD’s intention to share Helios’ networking standards with competitors, including Intel. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman highlighted the integration of AMD’s MI450 chips in ChatGPT’s infrastructure. Despite a recent decline in AMD’s stock, analysts remain optimistic, with projections for significant revenue growth in the AI segment. The company is expected to capture 3-4% of the $300-400 billion AI accelerator market, bolstered by strategic acquisitions and partnerships.
