As a supervising producer at Ideastream Public Media, my role involves sourcing news from diverse platforms, communicating with reporters, and managing an assignment calendar for 20 daily radio newscasts. This showcases the intense workload of local journalism, particularly during programs like Morning Edition and All Things Considered. The increasing influence of artificial intelligence (AI) raises questions about its role in transforming journalism. David Caswell, an AI consultant, believes AI will reshape journalism but asserts that more jobs may emerge, albeit with different responsibilities, such as overseeing AI-driven newsgathering. However, concerns exist about the potential for job downsizing. Johannes Klingebiel emphasizes the need for AI to enhance journalists’ effectiveness rather than merely drive efficiency. While some journalists may feel emotionally connected to storytelling, AI has proven capable of emotional nuance as well. Although Ideastream Public Media currently refrains from using AI in reporting, the evolution of journalism demands adaptability to this technological advance.
