Andhra to use AI tools to tackle mosquito menace

Andhra Pradesh is set to launch the Smart Mosquito Surveillance System (SMoSS), a pioneering pilot project aimed at managing mosquito populations during the monsoon season. Targeting six major municipal corporations—Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Kakinada, Rajamahendravaram, Nellore, and Kurnool—the initiative relies on AI-powered sensors, drones, and IoT technology to monitor mosquito species, density, and environmental factors. With dengue and malaria cases rising in the state—5,555 reported in 2024 and 6,453 in 2023—SMoSS will provide timely alerts for civic teams to take action, moving away from ineffective ‘blind spraying’ methods. The project will use drones for efficient larvicide spraying, ensuring reduced chemical use and costs. A real-time dashboard will facilitate continuous data tracking, while operational responsibilities are outsourced to specialized agencies. With a focus on public health, the initiative aims to effectively combat mosquito-borne diseases by promptly identifying hotspots for targeted interventions.
