Anthropic has donated its Model Context Protocol (MCP) to the newly formed Agentic AI Foundation under the Linux Foundation, aimed at establishing open standards for agentic artificial intelligence. Co-founded by Anthropic, Block, and OpenAI, with backing from tech giants like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon, MCP serves as a critical open standard connecting AI applications to external tools and data sources. In its first year, MCP achieved significant industry adoption with over 10,000 active public servers across various platforms, including ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot. The protocol supports enhanced functionalities like Tool Search and programmatic tool calling. Its recent updates introduced asynchronous operations and statelessness features. The Linux Foundation, known for overseeing major open-source projects, will ensure MCP’s sustainability and neutrality. This initiative promotes collaboration and shared technical standards for the evolving agentic AI ecosystem, underscoring the importance of open-source infrastructure for security and innovation in AI technologies.
