Anthropic to donate $20m to US political group backing AI regulation | Technology

Anthropic has announced a $20 million investment to support US political candidates advocating for AI industry regulation. This move positions the company against OpenAI, which promotes less stringent regulations. Anthropic plans to donate to Public First Action, a political group opposing federal restrictions on state-level AI regulations, particularly against an executive order from December issued by Donald Trump. Notably, the group supports Republican candidate Marsha Blackburn for governor of Tennessee, who has resisted congressional efforts to limit state AI laws. Anthropic states that AI developers should prioritize the public good over personal interests. As the AI sector prepares to influence the US midterm elections, various states are actively considering or implementing regulatory measures. Public First Action was established by two former Congress members to counter Leading the Future, which opposes strict AI regulations and has received substantial backing from industry leaders like OpenAI’s president Greg Brockman and venture capitalist Marc Andreessen.
