A new report by Anthropic reveals that criminals are increasingly utilizing AI throughout their operations, from reconnaissance and malware development to fraud and extortion. The findings highlight AI’s role as an active operator in criminal enterprises, illustrated by a case where an attacker employed an AI coding agent for a large-scale data extortion campaign targeting 17 organizations, including hospitals and government agencies. This shift allows single individuals to manage complex attacks traditionally requiring skilled teams, raising concerns for cybersecurity defenders.
AI is embedded across the entire attack lifecycle, streamlining reconnaissance, data theft, and ransom negotiations, enabling rapid and adaptive assaults. The report also underscores AI’s transformative impact on fraud, with criminals employing it to analyze stolen data, create victim profiles, and orchestrate sophisticated scams such as carding and romance schemes. Overall, AI is decreasing the technical barriers to cybercrime, resulting in scalable and efficient criminal operations.
