Apple is exploring a partnership with Google to revitalize its Siri voice assistant using a model inspired by Google’s Gemini, according to a Bloomberg report. The tech giant recently approached Google to create a custom AI model in anticipation of a launch next year. Meanwhile, Google has started training a version for Apple’s servers. While Apple initially preferred collaborating with Anthropic, financial terms prompted discussions with Google and OpenAI as well. The negotiations for Siri’s update are distinct from current integrations of OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Despite announcing various AI initiatives for 2024, Apple has faced delays, pushing back the Siri upgrade by a year due to engineering issues. After a reorganization of Siri’s development team, including shifts in leadership, there has been notable staff turnover. As Apple continues to assess its options, the fate of Siri’s AI capabilities remains uncertain amidst growing competition in the AI landscape.
