Are There Advertisements on ChatGPT? Not at This Time.

OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman, seen here at a developer conference in October, has said he would consider adding advertisements to ChatGPT. But some users complain they're already seeing ad-like messages in the app.

In a recent discussion, Mark Chen, OpenAI’s Chief Research Officer, acknowledged shortcomings in handling a promotion for Target’s shopping app created using ChatGPT, clarifying it wasn’t an advertisement since Target didn’t pay OpenAI. Despite halting these promotions, analysts predict that advertising may soon permeate AI applications, similar to how it infiltrated other previously ad-free domains. OpenAI’s goal of raising $1 trillion for data centers increases pressure to generate revenue, leading CEO Sam Altman to approach potential advertising cautiously. While advertising could potentially enhance accessibility for users, concerns remain over user experience and trust, particularly given intrusive ads in social media. OpenAI’s current strategy focuses on commission revenue from users already seeking products. Despite no current plans for ads, significant revenue generation is crucial for sustaining free AI tools. Competing platforms like Google are also exploring advertising, indicating a transformative shift in how AI interacts with users and monetizes its services.
