Many university students are increasingly using generative AI (GenAI) tools for learning and assessments. While beneficial, concerns arise when these tools carry over into workplaces, especially where sensitive client data and proprietary information are involved. The growing trend of “shadow AI”—where students operate GenAI tools without proper oversight—poses significant risks, as it can lead to inadvertent data breaches and privacy violations.
Students often lack awareness of ethical guidelines applicable in professional contexts and may unknowingly upload sensitive information. Universities typically have policies regarding GenAI use in academic settings, but these don’t always extend to work-integrated learning. To bridge this gap, educational institutions should enhance placement preparation by providing guidance on GenAI ethics, risks, and responsibilities. Orientation sessions can facilitate discussions around acceptable usage. By leveraging resources developed by experts at Deakin University, stakeholders can foster a shared understanding of responsible GenAI use in professional environments.
