As AI Adoption Grows, Programmers’ Trust Declines

For programmers, even as AI adoption climbs, trust wanes

The 2025 Stack Overflow Developer Survey reveals that while 84% of developers employ or plan to use AI tools, skepticism remains prevalent. Positive sentiment toward AI tools has dropped to 60%, down from over 70% in the previous two years. Distrust is evident, with only 33% of developers expressing trust in AI outputs, and 46% actively distrust them. Key frustrations include “almost right” AI solutions and the time-consuming nature of debugging AI-generated code. Despite AI’s rise, traditional coding tools like Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code dominate preferences. Popular languages remain JavaScript, HTML/CSS, and Python, with Rust being the most admired. Concerns over AI-induced technical debt are noted, with the call for caution in delegating critical tasks to AI. Notably, 75% of developers emphasize the necessity of human advice for tasks where AI reliability is uncertain. The findings highlight a complex relationship between developers, AI adoption, and trust in automation technology.
