In a significant cyber defamation case, Dibrugarh Police have apprehended Pratim Bora for circulating morphed and explicit images of his former girlfriend using advanced AI tools. Bora allegedly superimposed the woman’s face onto pornographic visuals, falsely portraying her as involved in the adult film industry while claiming she resided in the U.S. This malicious act aimed to tarnish her reputation following a personal breakup, sparking outrage throughout Assam. Under a complaint by the victim, Ms. Phukan, the cybercrime unit initiated an inquiry that led to Bora’s arrest. He confessed to using AI platforms like Midjourney AI and Desire AI to create and disseminate the defamatory material via fake accounts. The police have registered the case, invoking various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, addressing offenses of cyber harassment and defamation. Authorities have urged the public to avoid sharing this content and warned of legal repercussions for those who do.
