This study assessed the usability and user perceptions of TestMyTeeth, an AI-driven app for at-home dental plaque screening. While the app shows promise for enhancing preventive oral care, it faces significant usability challenges. Participants struggled with capturing clear intra-oral photographs, raising concerns about the app’s reliability and the necessity for professional oversight. The System Usability Scale (SUS) score of 56.2 indicates marginal usability, suggesting users encountered frustrations that could hinder wider adoption. Usability challenges were consistent across demographics, underscoring the need for intuitive design enhancements. Users expressed distrust in AI assessments without professional verification and suggested teledentistry integration for improved accuracy. Proposed improvements include real-time image guidance and motivational features like progress tracking. Future research should aim for broader participant diversity and clinical validation of the AI’s accuracy. Addressing these challenges is essential for making TestMyTeeth a reliable, user-friendly tool in self-monitoring and improving oral health outcomes.
