OpenAI reorg at risk as Attorneys General push AI safety • The Register

The Attorneys General of California and Delaware, Rob Bonta and Kathy Jennings, have called upon OpenAI to enhance the safety of its services for children. They highlighted tragic incidents, including a young Californian’s suicide, linked to prolonged interactions with an OpenAI chatbot, and cautioned against the company’s impending shift from nonprofit to Public Benefit Corporation, which they believe prioritizes profits over public safety. Bonta stressed the importance of maintaining OpenAI’s safety mission amid restructuring fears. OpenAI’s Board Chair, Bret Taylor, acknowledged these concerns, asserting the company’s commitment to ensuring safety as a top priority and announced plans to implement expanded protections for teens, including parental controls. This request follows a prior letter from 44 State Attorneys General emphasizing accountability among tech corporations in safeguarding children from harmful content. The ongoing debate reflects broader concerns about AI safety and the responsibility of tech firms in protecting vulnerable users.
