The Australian government has announced new regulations to restrict access to abusive technologies, particularly AI applications that generate sexually explicit images. Minister for Communications Anika Wells emphasized the need to combat online stalking tools and non-consensual deepfake content that harm individuals, especially children. The crackdown will enhance existing laws against stalking and the unauthorized distribution of explicit materials.
Technology companies will be held accountable for managing access to these harmful tools, akin to the upcoming social media access ban for users under 16, effective in December. Federal eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant reported a dramatic increase in cases of digitally altered intimate images involving minors, underscoring the urgency of these measures. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also revealed plans to include YouTube in the child social media ban, stressing the protection of children takes precedence over platform interests. These regulatory steps aim to mitigate the real and lasting damage caused by these technologies.
