Australia has blocked access to three websites using artificial intelligence to generate child sexual exploitation material, following a warning from the country’s eSafety Commissioner, Julie Inman Grant. These “nudify” sites, which allowed users to create explicit images of real individuals, attracted around 100,000 monthly visits from Australians. The initiative to shut down these sites stems from high-profile cases involving school students and the platforms’ failure to implement essential safeguards. Grant stated the sites even promoted features like undressing “any girl” and options for generating “schoolgirl” images. After a September warning threatened penalties of up to AUD 49.5 million (USD 32.2 million), the websites withdrew from Australia. Additionally, Hugging Face, an AI model hosting platform, adjusted its terms of service to reinforce compliance with Australian laws. This move supports Australia’s leadership in combating online child exploitation amid increasing concerns over AI-generated abuse materials.
